• Select Independent Annual Meeting

New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Greetings from New Orleans, my friends. Karen and I are here by invitation to the Select Independent Funeral Homes Annual Meeting. The Select organization is by invitation only. It consists of the top firms in each state, county, and city. Funeral homes must be family owned and independent organizations that pass a rigorous selection process and be sponsored by two other member funeral homes. We are so proud to be the firm invited to join this age old organization promoting better funeral service nationally and internationally. Hawthorn's was a longtime member under the ownership of the Hawthorn family (known then as the Select Morticians). I remember discussing these annual meetings with Mr. Mark Osborne and the benefits and fellowship they provided.
Karen and I are making new and dear friends in New Orleans. We came to show how funeral service is done right in Carthage, Texas. But, my friends, these select morticians can do it right in New Orleans, too!! We held a mock jazz funeral from the Roosevelt Waldorf Astoria Hotel down Canal Street and Back. We were privileged to meet the Boyd Mothe Family of Mothe Funeral Homes and Mr. Louis Charbonnet of Charbonnet Family Services. They conducted the jazz funeral. WOW! Funerals can change everything. Traditions change throughout our nation, but they are meaningful to all. I noticed many on the streets joining our procession, exemplifying their tradition of showing family respect. The music is mournful proceeding toward the cemetery, which they call the "first line." Then, the tone changes and begins to celebrate as handkerchiefs are waved through the air to dry the tears of memory and bring joy, which is the "second line." I tell you these men do it right.
We thank our director friends in New Orleans for all the hospitality, great food, and fellowship. We will take home so much more than we brought to the table. We are blessed.

You made this as easy as possible - and I know what it takes! Just knowing precious friends were caring for her and for us made all the difference. Much love.

  • To my friends Carlton and Karen Shamburger. Better late than never to express my love and appreciation for the wonderful way you treated my daughter and myself when we came in to make decisions for Ted's funeral. Tears flowed when I saw him - he looked exactly like he used to before he started "going down." And thank you for giving me a Gideon Bible honoring him. I appreciate you for the day of the funeral as it went so smoothly.
