Mrs. Doris Y'Barbo Smith

A mass of Christian burial for Mrs. Doris Y’Barbo Smith will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2015 at the St. William of Vercelli Catholic Church with Father Jesudoss Thomas officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Nacogdoches, Texas under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. with a Rosary held at 7:00 p.m. at Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith died December 15, 2015 in Carthage, Texas. Mrs. Doris LaVerne Y’Barbo Smith was born January 16, 1929 in the Springhill Community of Nacogdoches County, Texas. She was one of four children born to the marriage of Thomas Valentine and Mary Grace Y’Barbo. Doris married William Joseph “Dub” Smith in 1949 and they celebrated 50 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1999. Mrs. Smith attended Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, Nacogdoches Business College and Panola College school of nursing where she received her L.V.N. She worked at Panola General Hospital and Panola Nursing Home, and later she worked as a home health nurse. Doris enjoyed gardening, cooking and being with her family. Her grandchildren were one of her greatest joys. She was a member of the Silver Strummers where she played ukulele and would joke about being the only Catholic. She traveled many states and across Europe. Mrs. Smith was a devout Christian and member of the St. William of Vercelli Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Society. She volunteered for the Hawthorn Funeral Home Ladies Auxiliary and aided in comforting the families. She enjoyed garage sales, shoe shopping and finding bargains. She is also preceded in death by her parents, brother, Thomas Eugene Y’Barbo and sister, Clara McEnaney and grandson, Ryan William Smith. Mrs. Smith is survived by her four children, Gehrig Smith and wife Debbie of Sugarland, Robin Smith and wife Gethyn of Haughton, LA, Chris Smith of Carthage, Roma Jones of Longview, grandchildren, Zachary Dabney, Cody Smith, Haley Smith, Courtney Smith, Breitenbach and J.T. Smith and Erin Meier, three great grandchildren, Grayson Dabney, Layla Jones and Turner Ryan Smith. The family would like to thank Panola County Nursing Home for such wonderful care.
