Dr. A. Y. Sturdivant

Funeral services for Dr. A. Y. Sturdivant, 76 of Carthage, Texas will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Jackson and Dr. Dale Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Corinth Cemetery in Shelby County, Texas under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 6 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Dr. Sturdivant went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at his home in Carthage, Texas. Mr. Arlen Young Sturdivant was born November 7, 1935 in Hermileigh, Texas. Arlen was one of two boys born to the marriage of Ira Ray and Ona Gertrude Vernon Sturdivant. Dr. Sturdivant attended the University of Texas where he received his B.S. Degree in Pharmacy in 1958. He received his Doctorate of Medicine in 1968 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Arlen practiced in Clarksville, Texas and moved to Carthage in 1975 where he and Jane began his General Practice of Family Medicine. In 1988 they were afforded the unique opportunity to work in Saudi Arabia. This experience strengthened his faith and provided him many opportunities to witness for his Lord and Savior. Dr. Sturdivant was proud to have treated men from sixty one nations where they all understood his smile. He returned to Carthage in June of 1994 and re-opened his Family Practice with a warm welcome from the Panola County residents and continued until he retired in 2006. A faithful member of Central Baptist Church, Dr. Sturdivant was active in the Co-ed Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Vernon Ray Sturdivant. Dr. Sturdivant is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Billie Jane Tate Sturdivant of Carthage, daughters, Karen Downing Peterson and husband Wallace of Carthage, Kathy Downing Condon and husband Jim of Bossier City, LA. He was “Poppa” to his adoring grandchildren, Kristen Peterson of Chicago, IL, Kory Peterson of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Sam Condon of Bossier City, LA. Also surviving Dr. Sturdivant are his brother-in-laws, Bernell Tate and family, and David Tate and family, along with a host of other family and friends who loved him. Serving as pallbearers will be Wallace Peterson, Robert Wilson, Jerry Hansen, Bill Holder, Gene Dickson and Don Yocum. Honorary pallbearers will be the Co-ed Sunday School Class. The family request memorials be made in Dr. Sturdivant’s name to the Dr. A. Y. Sturdivant Medical Scholarship Fund at First State Bank of Carthage.
