Services for Mrs. Margaret Eugenia Gill Smith, 89, of Carthage, Texas will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, July 29, 2011, at Central Baptist Church in Carthage with Dr. Charles Dodson and Dr. W.C. “Bill” Everett officiating. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Thursday, July 28, 2011, from 6 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in Carthage. Margaret Eugenia Gill Smith was born December 4, 1921, in Brashear, Texas to Robert Allen and Margaret Caroline Smith Gill. She spent most of her life in Carthage, graduating with the class of 1939. Eugenia then went on to Baylor University, where she met the love of her life, William Cecil “W.C.” Smith, whom she later married on August 7, 1943. She was graduated from Baylor in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics. A homemaker, Eugenia was a long time member of Central Baptist Church where she worked with the GA’s, was a leader of WMU, and was involved with the starting of the Church library. She participated in the early days of the Texas Tea Room and was a member of the Carthage Book Forum. Mrs. Smith loved to work with her hands doing very delicate cross-stitching, knitting and crocheting. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Jimmy Jacobs; brother-in-law, Jake Walker and son-in-law, Robert Reid. Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband of 67 years, Dr. W.C. Smith of Carthage; sons, Robby Smith and wife Joy of Carthage and Jamey Smith and wife Carol of Kingwood; daughters, Carolyn Reid of Carthage and Elizabeth Yarborough and husband Guy of Gladewater. Also surviving are her sister, Ouida “Aunt Skeetie” Walker of Carthage; grandchildren, Shannon Smith and wife Michelle of Tyler, Chuck Reid and wife Julie of Hamburg, PA; Randy Reid and wife Julie of The Woodlands, Brandon Smith and wife Brandy of Keller, Matt Smith and wife Stephanie of Rowlett, Mary Armstrong and husband Patrick of Carthage, Mike Smith of Kingwood and Shelley Alley and husband Adam of Nacogdoches; 16 great grandchildren; special friend, Sherry Woods; numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Shannon Smith, Randy Reid, Brandon Smith, Matt Smith, Mike Smith, Patrick Armstrong and Adam Alley. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Reid and Sam Raley. The family request memorials be made in Mrs. Smith’s name to Missions at Central Baptist Church or the Texas Tea Room.
