Mrs. Janie Abernathy

Funeral services for Mrs. Janie Abernathy, 71, of Carthage, Texas will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 2, 2015 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kirby Hill officiating. Burial will follow in the Hughes Springs Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 2-4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Mrs. Abernathy died peacefully surrounded by her family, Friday, January 30, 2015 in Carthage, Texas. Mrs. Jane Leslie Mahoney Abernathy was born April 28, 1943 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was the youngest of three children born to the marriage of Claire James and Marion Jane Olds Mahoney. Janie was raised in Michigan completing schools there and attended Western Michigan University. She married Robert Chad Abernathy on May 26, 1974. Mrs. Abernathy worked as a paraprofessional through C.I.S.D. on the Libby Elementary and Baker Koonce campuses. Janie and Chad were longtime members of the Southside Baptist Church and the Acts Sunday School Class. Janie loved people, which was evident spending time with each friend she would see catching up with you and yours. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend to us all. Janie is preceded in death by her parents, sisters; Mary Ann Mahoney and, Ann Mahoney, granddaughter; Mary Jane Drillette. Mrs. Abernathy is survived by her devoted husband and caregiver; Chad Abernathy of Carthage, children; Sarah Shelton and husband Chris of Longview, Randy Abernathy and wife Karen of Mansfield, Kristi Tosh and husband Randy of Mt. Pleasant, Amy Drillette and husband Scott of Brock, Chip Abernathy and wife Jacque of The Woodlands, Megan Eshbaugh and husband Joel of Lebanon, New Hampshire, brother-in-law; Phil Abernathy and wife Katy of Jacksonville, Florida, fifteen grandchildren, five great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, her loving residents and staff at Carthage Healthcare Center and a host of friends and neighbors. Serving as pallbearers will be; Will Abernathy, Jake Hardin, Thomas Abernathy, Nick Hardin, Bo McGee, Steve Guerra, Zach Drillette, Pete Jodal. Honorary pallbearers will be; Max Abernathy, Ethan Eshbaugh, Jack Abernathy and Steven Paul Guerra. The family suggests memorials to Hospice of East Texas, Mission Carthage or the Gideon’s International.
