Mrs. Joan Smith

Mrs. Joan Marcene Smith, 90 passed away peacefully and joined the Lord on February 2, 2014 in Carthage, Texas. Joan was born on October 27, 1923 in Bolivar, Missouri to Cliff and Ruby Manuel Burchett. Mrs. Smith married Bill C. Smith on March 24, 1945 and together celebrated over 50 years until he preceded her in death in 1995. Joan loved the Lord and was faithful in reading her Bible and daily devotional, studying her Sunday School lesson, and her prayer life, especially interceding for others. She loved her family, friends, church and the Martin Sunday School class at First Christian Church in Miami, Oklahoma, where she was a member since 1953. Joan loved to cook and share what she made. She was renowned for making divinity for church fundraisers and handmade cookies for Bible School. She was quick to offer help to other people and generous to share whatever she had. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Beverly Allen and husband Larry of Carthage and her son, Ronald Smith and wife Glenda of Mountain Home, Arkansas; her 4 grandchildren, Mike Smith and wife Lonnette of McKinney, David Smith and wife Heather of Dellroy, Ohio, Jared Allen and wife Bobi Ann of Huntsville, Alabama, and Jennifer Allen of Tyler; 6 great grandchildren, Summer and Nolan Smith of Dellroy, Ohio, Bryce and Brayden Smith of McKinney and Kati Ann and Kie Allen of Huntsville, Alabama; sister, Marilyn Ahart of Bolivar, Missouri. The Family would like to thank the special friends who have helped Joan with transportation to out of town appointments, have been there when she was in the hospital, sent cards and prayed for her. A special thanks to dear friends, Dale and Shirley Culver, her church family, her friends at the Baptist Village in Miami, Oklahoma where she lived since 2002, the Osborn’s Pharmacy family, and Dr. Steve Grigsby, who was not just her doctor, but a personal friend. Also, to the Winkler House staff, the sitters who have cared for her during her recent illness and the nurses and staff of Heart’sWay Hospice in Carthage, Texas. Visitation for Mrs. Smith in Carthage will be from 6-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation in Oklahoma will be from 6-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 5, 2013 at Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami, Oklahoma. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the First Christian Church, Miami, Oklahoma. Burial will follow in the Vinita Cemetery next to her husband, Bill.
