L. H. Chandler

Memorial Services for Mr. L. H. Chandler, III, 68 of Carthage, Texas will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 29, 2011 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keefe Cropper officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 4:30-6:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2011 at the funeral home. Mr. Chandler died Wednesday, October 26, 2011 in Longview, Texas. Mr. L. H. Chandler, III, was born April 1, 1943 in Atlanta, Texas. He was one of three children born to the marriage of L. H. and Mattie Heoloise Shell Chandler, II. L. H. was a graduate of Carthage High School with the class of 1961 where he lettered in four sports. At SFA he served as team captain his senior year, lettered all four years and earned All Texas and All Lone Star Conference honors in 1963 and 1964. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. While at SFA, he received the Ralph Todd Award his senior year. L. H. was courted by many professional teams, then played semi-pro football. Mr. Chandler married Barbara Lynette Holt May 1, 1985 and together they celebrated 26 years of marriage. He retired from United Gas after 25 years of service then owned and operated the Carthage Country Club. L. H. was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Carthage, loved spending time with his family and his many friends throughout his career and life. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Beverly Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Chandler of Carthage, children, Brandy and Rodney Socia of Carthage, Brett and Christie Chandler of Carthage, Jeaneane Chandler of Carthage, Jennifer and Gerald Lemaire of Carthage, grandchildren, Chance Socia, Clark Neuman, Chloe Neuman, Blake Socia, Sophie Socia, Sarah Kathryn Walker, Lizzie Walker, J.J. Chandler, Trevor Lemaire, sister, Norma Gail Lewis and husband Charles of N. Little Rock, AR, brother-in-law, Dale Smith of DeBerry, brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Holt of Houston, Ed and Margie Holt of Friendswood, Buck and Janet Holt of New Caney, Richard and Leslie Holt of Nacogdoches, Jay and Gracie Holt of Ft. Worth, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. The family requests memorials to the Carthage High School Athletic Department.
