Mrs. Mary Alice Cades Williams

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Williams, 88, of Carthage, Texas will be Saturday, June 29, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dale Walker and Mr. Carlton H. Shamburger officiating. Burial will follow in the Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Mary Alice Cades Williams was born on April 7, 1936, in Carthage, Texas. She passed from this life on June 26, 2024, in Houston, Texas. Alice was one of five children born to Joseph and Pheobie Zona Lawhorn Cades. She was a Carthage native graduating Carthage High School in 1954. She married her lifelong love Betram Williams on April 16, 1955. Together they celebrated 29 years of marriage and were blessed with two daughters before Betram preceded her in death in 1985. Alice was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother known lovingly as “Muh” to her family and friends. Her family and friends also appreciated her ever-present smile, quick wit, easy laugh and a love of watching the Astros play. She knew and loved her Lord and family above all else. She was a long-time member of the Southside Baptist Church. She was also a charter member of New Life Baptist Church. Alice began her working career with the telephone company in 1954. She was a talented florist working at Carthage Flower Shop for many years. What became the joy of her life was her time at Hawthorn Funeral Home, where she began assisting with visitations and services. She soon earned her insurance license allowing her to arrange preneed funeral plans. Her decades of service also included the Hawthorn Ladies Auxiliary. Alice along with Pete Williams and Carlton Shamburger created the Service of Remembrance Christmas memorial program for the citizens of Carthage and Panola County. Besides being a bit of a jokester, Alice also possessed a sympathetic and caring soul. Her cheerful demeanor and uplifting spirit made a difference for many families in their times of grief, whether it be long-time friends or a family she was meeting for the first time. Alice left a lasting impact on many lives. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Joe Monuie Cades, three sisters, Nelda Benefiel, Willadene Greer, and Helen Towns. Mrs. Williams is survived by her loving family, two daughters, Adana Woods and husband John D. of Cypress, Sharon Crump and husband Randy of Houston; grandchildren, John Woods Jr. of Houston, Natalie Baker and husband Jared of Cypress, William Crump of Austin, Lela Crump of Los Angeles; great grandchildren, Hadley Rose Baker and Harvey Reid Baker. The family would like to thank Parkway Place in Houston for the loving care they provided Muh. Serving as pallbearers will be John D. Woods, Sr, Randy Crump, John Woods, Jr, William Crump, Jared Baker, Greg Benefiel. Russell Young and Donny Honeycutt. The family suggests memorial to the Alzheimer’s Association.
