Mrs. Retha Whiddon

Funeral services for Mrs. Retha Whiddon, 83, of Deadwood, Texas will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 16, 2015 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wade Floyd and Mr. Jason Barnett officiating. Burial will follow in the Deadwood Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday night at the funeral home. Mrs. Whiddon died October 13, 2015 in Carthage, Texas. Mrs. Retha Carolyn LaGrone Whiddon was born October 11, 1932 in Panola County, Texas. She was one of three children born to the marriage of Ira Calvin and Ludie Mae Wilkerson LaGrone. She was raised in Deadwood graduating Carthage High School with the class of 1950 and was a graduate of Panola College. Retha married Kenneth Whiddon and they raised three children in a loving Christian home before he preceded her in death in 1984. Mrs. Whiddon worked as a rural mail carrier retiring after 33 years of service. Retha loved quilting, fishing and was an avid baseball and softball fan. She was a lifelong member of the Deadwood United Methodist Church. Retha was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Minnie Wise, brother, Buddy Ira LaGrone, brothers-in-law, D.R. Whiddon, Hugh Swanzy, and David Vickery. Mrs. Whiddon is survived by her sons, Winston Whiddon and wife Denise of Beckville, Calvin Whiddon and wife Melissa of Beaumont, daughter, Reba Coxen and husband Jerry of Deadwood, brother-in-law, David Wise, grandchildren, Aaron Whiddon, Layne and Joe Bronstad, Chase and Katie Whiddon, Cody Whiddon, Mallory Cross, Lindsey Cross, great grandchildren, Aubreigh Whiddon, Trevor Whiddon and Emerson Bronstad, special friend, Jessica Martin, aunts, Beckie Coats, Geraldine Wilkerson, Norene Womack, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Special thanks and appreciation to Carthage Healthcare and Heartsway Hospice for their loving care. Serving as pallbearers will be, Nathan Wise, David Stacy, Bob Rawson, Bennie Gasper, Mike Whiddon, Hugh Swanzy, Mark Forsythe and Wes Wisener. Honorary pallbearers will be, Walter Craft, Robert Sears, David Wise, Mervin Scott and Butch Marsalis. The family request memorials to the Deadwood United Methodist Church.
