Mr. Walter Lavell Gary

Funeral services for Mr. Walter Lavell Gary, 83, of Carthage, Texas formerly of Berlin, Ohio, will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Allen Tilley and Dr. Dale Reed officiating. Burial will follow in the Six Mile Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday night at Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mr. Gary died peacefully December 9, 2013 in Carthage, Texas. Mr. Walter Lavell Gary was born December 23, 1929 in Carthage, Texas. He was the oldest of three children born to the marriage of sharecroppers, Walter Lacy and Lola Koonce Gary. He was raised and schooled in Snap and Murvaul communities graduating from Gary High School. He married a girl from Springhill, Louisiana, Louise Beckham in 1949 and together they had five children. Walter began work as a pipeliner and was a lifelong member of the Pipeliners Union. He was a strip miner and owner/operator of G&M Minerals in Berlin, Ohio. He was a longtime member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, receiving his 50 years pin. He loved quail hunting, his family and friends. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, and grandsons, Kris Chandler and Blake Hough, and an infant brother. Mr. Gary is survived by his son, Michael Lavell Gary of Carthage, daughters, Jayne Gary Bell and husband Leonard of Mesquite, Judy Gary Holder and husband Jim of Snap Community, Joan Gary Chandler of Carthage, Susan Gary Hough and husband Richard of Carthage, sister, Loretta Gary Specie and husband Roy of Fayetteville, AR, grandchildren, Brian Bell and Krista of Lubbock, Joe Holder of Carthage, Jon Holder and wife Tammy of Carthage, Korey Chandler and wife Lisa of Carthage, Adam Hough and wife Summer of Carthage, great grandchildren, Meagan Gary of Butte, MT, Emily Gary of Misoule, MT and Sean Gary of Dillon MT, Shelbi Bell, Carli Bell both of Lubbock, Kaleb Chandler of Carthage, Ryleigh Green of Carthage, Kade Avery Holder of Carthage, Callie Rae Hough of Carthage, Kolton Chandler of Carthage, Montana and Mason Elliott of Carthage, Missy Durr of Lexington, KY, numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers will be, Jeremy Green, Jon Holder, Joe Holder, Brian Bell, Korey Chandler, and Adam Hough.
