Funeral services for Mr. Walter F. Mauritzen, 90, of Carthage, Texas will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Allen Tilley and Pastor Andrew Werley officiating. Burial will follow in the Clayton Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday night at the funeral home. Mr. Mauritzen died Sunday May 6, 2012 peacefully at his home in Carthage, Texas. Mr. Walter Floyd Mauritzen was born February 8, 1922 in Clayton, Texas. He was one of six children born to the marriage of William Floyd and Fannalou Pippen Mauritzen. Walter was raised in Clayton attending rural schools and later graduating from Carthage High School with the class of 1940. He served his country in the U. S. Army Air Corps from 1941-1945 in the 59th Fighter Squadron and he was a Crew Chief for the 33rd fighter group. It was in the war he received letters from the daughter of his aunt Pearl's friend, Jeanne Alice Stewart. They exchanged letters until his service ended on September 11, 1945 and the couple then married on December 15, 1945. They spent the next 60 years together raising three sons in a loving Christian home. Walter served as an assistant postmaster in Carthage and spent many years in promotional sales as well as farming. Mr. Mauritzen was a longtime member and deacon in the First Baptist Church of Carthage. He and Jeanne were avid license plate collectors, traveling all over the United States collecting, and had well over 25,000 license plates in their collection. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, sister, Mildred Estelle Hand and grandson, Brian Jeffrey Mauritzen. Mr. Mauritzen is survived by his sons, Mike Mauritzen and wife Betty of Waco, Chris Mauritzen and wife Nedra of Clayton, David Mauritzen and wife Jackie of Longview, brother, Ted Mauritzen and wife Debbie of Clayton, sisters, Beth Stone and husband Alan of Longview, Helen Coyle of Hondo, Doris Hollister and husband Don of Carthage, brother-in-law, Preston Hand of Henderson, Bill Scantlin of Kerrville, grandchildren, Brad Mauritzen and wife Deanna of Houston, Angie Werley and husband Andrew of Houston, Brooke Mauritzen of Dallas, Blake Mauritzen of Dallas, Cory Mauritzen and wife Kristin of Little Elm, Suzanne Mauritzen of Johannesburg, South Africa, Clayton Mauritzen and wife Miriam of Kalispell, MT, Covin Mauritzen of Lake Cherokee, Cullen Mauritzen of Camp Pendleton, CA and six great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Brad Mauritzen Blake Mauritzen, Clayton Mauritzen, Covin Mauritzen, Cullen Mauritzen and Dr. Keith Keeling.
