Funeral services for Mrs. Alta Rae Hughes Craig, 87, of Carthage, Texas will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 30, 2018 at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Matt Comer officiating. Burial will follow in the Shady Grove Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday night at Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Alta Rae Hughes Craig was born May 8, 1931 in Shelby County, Texas to the marriage of Marion and Idell Oates Hughes. She passed this life November 27, 2018 in Carthage, Texas. She was raised and attended schools in both Center and DeBerry. Alta worked over 20 years for AT&T as a machine operator. She married Eddie J.R. Craig February 22, 1976 and they celebrated almost 44 years together. Mrs. Craig was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church and attended Still Waters Cowboy Church regularly. She loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, horseback riding and working in the ground growing vegetables, flowers and more. She is preceded in death by her parents, and 12 siblings. Mrs. Craig is survived by her husband, J.R. Craig of Carthage, daughters, Pat Cole and husband Johnny of Marshall, Renee Lawhorn and husband Dale of Carthage, Jane Barnett Hardee of Carthage, step sons, Eddie Eugene Craig of Austin, Jerry Quinton Craig of Nacogdoches, Samuel Lovess Bently Craig and wife Michelle of Nacogdoches, Shiree Lynn Barton of Nacogdoches, grandchildren, David Cole and wife Sheri of Marshall, Sonya Davis and husband Tator of Carthage, Adrienne Barton and husband Tim of Marshall, Nikki Lawhorn and Carley Lawhorn both of Carthage, four step grandchildren, Mary Lynn, Amanda, Brandy, and Kevin great grandchildren, Cody Jones and wife Callie, Josh Cole, Zack Barton and wife Megan, Tucker Barton, and Zoe Cole; special nephew and niece, Ted and Cathy Ballard of DeBerry, other nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
