    Mrs Doris Gibbs

    January 31, 1939 - April 26, 2022

    Funeral services for Mrs. Doris LaVerne Wilkerson Gibbs will be 10:00 a.m. Friday April 29, 2022, at the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Mary Smith officiating. Visitation will be 9-10:00 a.m. prior to the service. Mrs. Doris LaVerne Wilkerson Gibbs was born January 31, 1939 in Deadwood, Texas. She passed this life April 26, 2022 in Carthage, Texas. Doris LaVerne was the only child born to the marriage of Dorris Dewill and Brodie Lorraine LaGrone Wilkerson. She was raised in Deadwood graduating Carthage High School with the Bulldog class of 1957. She graduated Stephen F. Austin State University with a B.S. in 1960 and began her teaching career in Brazosport, Texas. She married Basel Gibbs and they celebrated 58 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 2019. Mrs. Gibbs served Elysian Fields as a professional educator teaching First Grade from 1965 – 1994. She received the Elysian Fields Distinguished Yellow Jacket Award in 2006. Doris was a member of the Deadwood UMC. She was active with the Deadwood Cemetery Association and a member of the O.E.S. Carthage Chapter #747 and the Retired Teachers Assoc. Doris LaVerne and Basel were active in farming and ranching, supporting youth and all things agriculture and livestock. Doris loved her family, friends and community. All who knew her, loved her and that warm smile. She is also preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Gibbs is survived by her sister/cousin, Sue Ann Ware and her children Amy Ware and James Love and daughters Carolann and Adeline, Vince and Jennifer Ware and son John Blocker, Brooke and Seth Michel and children Sarah and Sam; her cousin, Mary Latham and her children, Michael Latham, Lisa Latham and Joe Licari; nieces and nephews, Martha Lawhorne, Barbara Futrell, Lena Gibbs, Jimmy Gibbs, Angie Gibbs, Thomas Gibbs, Paul Gibbs, Jr., Cherie Horton, Helen Gibbs, and Steve LeGrand, sister-in-law, Dorothy Hardee of DeBerry; numerous great nieces, nephews and community friends. Serving as pallbearers will be, Vince Ware, James Love, Seth Michel, Jimmy Gibbs, Thomas Gibbs, Winston Horton, Chris Horton, and Wade Allums. Honorary pallbearers will be, Brad LaGrone, Joe Ben LaGrone, John Blocker Ware IV, and Sam Michel. The family requests memorials to the Deadwood Cemetery Assoc. c/o Daphne Alford 2076 FM South, Carthage, TX 75633.
