Hawthorn Funeral Home announces the passing of Jeffrey Scott Russell, 59, of Carthage, Texas. There will be a Memorial Service on March 6, 2021, 10:00 a.m. at The Hill Church West Campus in Ft. Worth, Texas. Cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Hawthorn Funeral Home. Jeffery Scott Russell was born September 15, 1961 in Rome, NY to the marriage of Harold Eugene and Marilyn Sue Glass Russell and passed away February 15, 2021 in Carthage. He attended Rome Free Academy graduating with the class of 1979. He furthered his education at Abilene Christian University, graduating in 1983 with a BA in Mass Communication. Scott loved God, his family, and sports. He loved to be with his family, making his famous “sticky buns” every Christmas Eve. His sport’s writing made you feel like you went to the game and made you an instant fan of any of the teams. While at Abilene Christian University he served on the Optimus, the university newspaper, in various capacities working his way up to the Sports Editor position. In his career he was a writer for the Stephenville Empire Tribune, Wichita Falls Times Record News and most recently the Panola Watchman. Scott was an award winning sprots writer, four times winning the Lone Star Conference’s Sportswriter of the Year Award. He also received honors for his coverage of the 1990-91 Wichita Falls Texans, who captured the Continental Basketball Association title. North and East Texas Press Association awarded him numerous awards for his sports writing, coverage, and photography between the years of 2019 – 2020. Since coming to Carthage, he loved covering the Carthage Bulldogs and the Beckville Bearcats. In his spare time, Scott enjoyed reading, watching sports on TV as well as trying to hit a golf ball where he aimed it. He also enjoyed going to The Ballpark in Arlington. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Sue Glass and father, Harold E. Russell. Mr. Russell is survived by his sisters, Kim Collier and husband Russ of Aledo, Kay Dade and husband Mike of McKinney and Denise Duccatte and husband Robert of Clifton Park, NY; brothers, Kevin Russell and wife Deborah of Castle Rock, CO, John Russell of Scotia, NY, and Andrew Russell and wife Tina of Wautoma, WI; 10 nephews and 3 nieces, 4 great nieces and 1 great nephew; and a host of friends. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to one of his favorite charities, Camp Hunt, P.O. Box 2358, Liverpool, NY, 13089.
