    Mrs. Nellie Collins Porter

    September 9, 1929 - May 4, 2021

    Funeral services for Gary native, Mrs. Nellie Collins Porter, 91, will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2021 at the Eastside Baptist Church with Rev. Dale Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Corinth Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5-7:00 p.m. Thursday night at Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Nellie Belle Collins Porter was born September 9, 1929 at the family home place in Gary, Texas. She passed this life peacefully on the same family home place she was born. Nellie was the younger of two children born to the marriage of Marcellus Cleveland “Cellus” and Nellie Julia Mims Collins. She was a graduate of Gary High School. Nellie married Earl Venard Porter September 25, 1948 and they celebrated 49 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1997. Mrs. Porter began working young in her parents commercial tomato fields and family Wood Mill. She would hold many jobs, lastly retiring from Walmart after 15 years of service. Nellie was talented in sewing, crocheting, gardening, cooking and raising chickens. Her favorite hobby was time with her grandchildren. She is also preceded in death by her parents, and brother, L.M. Collins. Mrs. Porter is survived by her devoted sons, Russell Porter and wife Pam of Gary, Ronnie Porter and wife Donna of Gary; grandchildren, Russ Porter and wife Ashley of Gary, Shelbye Almeida and husband Greg of Gary, Patrick Porter and wife Misty of Gary, Amanda Deason and husband Sam of Gary; great grandchildren, Collin Porter-Almeida, Lauren Almeida, Port Porter, Eli Porter, Presley Deason, Eliza Porter and Indy Deason; special cousins, Joyce LaVerne Collins-Rider, and Bobby Joe Ritter, numerous other relatives and a host of friends. The family wishes to thank her caregivers, Kathy Jackson, Montana Jones, Terrie Garrison, and Fay Boyd and the Heartsway Hospice for their special care.
