Bertie Long

Funeral services for Mrs. Bertie Jean Mason Long, 81 of Carthage, Texas will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, September 14, 2012 at the Carthage United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Ricky Jeane, Rev. Jeff Story and Rev. Dennis Landtroop officiating. Burial will follow in the Restland Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be Thursday evening from 6–8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Long passed away September 12, 2012 in Carthage. Mrs. Long was born May 14, 1931 in Vivian, Louisiana. She was one of five children born to the marriage of Alton J. and Ellie Stanfield Mason. Bertie married the love of her life Rev. Huey P. Long on December 22, 1946 and celebrated 65 years together until he preceded her in death on July 7, 2012. Mrs. Long was known for her gentle, loving spirit and devotion to God and family. She was a loving homemaker and precious mother to her children and an angel of a grandmother to her grandchildren. As a true disciple of God, she devoted her life to the ministry of her husband and her Lord and Savior. Bertie loved being surrounded by her family and friends. She enjoyed playing games with her grandchildren and teaching them about God. Her hobbies included reading and shopping. She is also preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Long is survived by her devoted children, Joycelyn Shaw and husband Joe of Pleasanton, Carolyn Sue Bishop and husband James of Carthage, Marilyn Phillips and husband Wayne of Glen Rose, Stephen Long of Carthage; siblings, A.C. Mason of Shreveport, Louisiana, Elvis Mason and wife Joan of Dallas, Virginia Gewin of Tyler, Ray Mason and wife Ava of Boca Raton, Florida; nine grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; three great, great grandchildren; numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Shaw II, Rodney Shaw, Paul Bishop, Steven Long, Jeff Laramore, Jonathan Macha, Jack Stick and Alan Jenkins. The family wishes to extend a very special “Thank You” to Mrs. Long’s special caregivers, Kim Wornat, Jamie Davis, Kirby Lewis and the nurses and staff of Heart’s Way Hospice.
