Funeral services for Mrs. Veltya Wells Powell LaGrone, 101 of Carthage will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2010 in the Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dale Reed and Mr. James Hugh Browning officiating. Burial will follow in Deadwood Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Family visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010 at the funeral home. Mrs. LaGrone died Monday, September 6, 2010 in Carthage, Texas. Mrs. Veltya Wells Powell LaGrone was born December 30, 1908 in the Panola Community of Panola County, Texas. She was the eighth of ten children born to the marriage of Thomas Benjamin and Lydia Reeves Wells. Veltya was a graduate of Logansport High School with the class of 1927. Mrs. LaGrone obtained her teaching certification through Stephen F. Austin University returning to teach in the rural Deadwood Community. She married O. B. Powell August 2, 1929 and celebrated 47 years together before he preceded her in death in 1976. Veltya later married Henry Joyce LaGrone on June 11, 1980 and he preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. LaGrone was a longtime devoted member of the Carthage Missionary Baptist Church. She is also preceded in death by her siblings, Samuel Eugene, Benjamin Buford, Mazie Pearl Wells, Lenzie Simmons Wells, Robert Anderson Wells and four sons who died young; stepsons, Clayton LaGrone and Henry Joyce LaGrone, Jr. and a step son-in-law, Jack Page. Mrs. LaGrone is survived by her step-daughter, Dianne LaGrone Page of Deadwood, step daughter-in-law, Sidna LaGrone of Deadwood, numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, Dan Wells and wife Dorothy of Clifton, Ben Wells of DeBerry, Betty Jenkins of Sugarland, Shirley Perkins of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Mary Ann Taylor of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Truma Faye Markham of Vivian, Louisiana, Numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Serving as pallbearers will be, Ben Wells, Patrick LaGrone, Scott Page, Monty Page, Brad LaGrone and Clay LaGrone.
