Mrs. Willena Metcalf

Willena "Willie" Mobbs Metcalf passed away on June 26, 2014 at the age of 77. She was the daughter of Travis and Esther Mobbs and was born in Longview, TX on July 15, 1936. Preceding Willena in death were her parents and granddaughter, Emily McCracken, and her devoted husband of 43 years, Joe Frank Metcalf. "Willie" and Joe Frank were married in Marshall, TX on February 6, 1970. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Sherry Stone Simpson of Longview, TX, Brenda Stone of Tatum, TX, Bobby Stone Jr. of California, Patty Stone of Kilgore, TX, and daughter Kim Metcalf Permenter of Tatum, TX. Her siblings L.T. and wife Mary Neal Mobbs, Pete Mobbs, and wife Linda, sister Priscilla and husband Walter Thomas. Willie is survived by 10 grandchildren, James Howell, Joey Howell, Jon Howell, Misty Roberts, Heather Stone, Dylan Stone, Bobbie Stone, Addison Maxwell, Hannah Nipp, and Chloe Permenter, as well as 7 great grandchildren, numerous nephews, nieces, and a host of friends. "Willie" attended Longview schools and spent many years as a beauty operator. Over the years, she spent a number of evenings providing perms in the kitchen, and dying eyebrows and eyelashes at her kitchen table. Willena was a lover of the movies. She spoke of times that she and her brother, L.T., paid with nickels to get into the theater. She often told stories of the many adventures she shared with her brothers and sister on Northcutt Heights. She loved spending time with family and was the happiest when all of her babies were home. Willena taught her girls to cook, but always had to come behind them and add a little of "this and that". Some of her "babies" favorite foods were her homemade chocolate and coconut pies and her cornbread in an iron skillet. She was quick-witted, funny, and loved to dance. She enjoyed working in her yard, planting flowers, and fussin' about Joe Frank's junk. Also well known by close friends for her "Willena-isms", she loved terms such as "yank-yank" music, "running the roads", "cut a rug", and "epizuti". Pallbearers will be her grandsons: James Howell, Joey Howell, Jon Howell, Jared Elarmo, Preston Roberts, and Addison Maxwell. Dewey Walker, Roy Hillin, and James Campell will serve as honorary pallbearers. The visitation will be held at Hawthorn Funeral Home on Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 5:00- 7:00 pm in the evening. The funeral service will be held at Hawthorn Funeral Home in Carthage, TX at 4:00 pm, on Monday, June 30, 2014 with Jason Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at Harris Chapel Cemetery.
